Michael serves as the Vice President-Risk Management, advising the firm's clients on alternative risk matters and insurance taxation since joining Santa Maria & Company. in 2003. With over 25 years experience in the financial services industry, Michael has developed and implemented insurance programs that have resulted in million dollar annual savings over conventional insurance products for his clients. He has designed programs on behalf of the firm's privately and closely held clients to help protect their assets, by carefully assessing financial and tax positions.
An expert at alternative risk finance, Michael has developed innovative alternative facilities to replace letters of credit used to secure company obligations. He has also utilized insurance to increase client credit lines and decrease borrowing costs. In helping the firm's clients achieve their corporate and personal goals, Michael works closely with a client's other professional advisors, including lawyers, accountants and bankers.
Michael began his career in public accounting as an auditor with KPMG Peat Marwick. He served 17 years as a senior executive with Jardine Insurance Brokers, a national retail brokerage house, specializing in alternative risk finance including captive, finite and self-insurance programs. In addition to his customer sales and service responsibilities, Michael has served in CFO and COO capacities.He also has five years of experience with American E&S, a national wholesale brokerage firm specializing in insurance placements for high-hazard industries.
Michael is a graduate of University of Colorado with a B.S. in Accounting and completed the CPA review program at the graduate school of the University of Southern California. He is a Certified Public Accountant and has been certified as an Associate in Risk Management. He is a member in good standing with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. Michael is active in his community and has served on the board of several youth organizations. Michael is married with two children.
